I have four external 1TB drives for this purpose because I know that external hard drives are less reliable than internal ones, so it's best to be fully prepared. This doesn't mean your drive will crash, it just makes it much more likely. It used to be simpler to format c: /s (for system files for floppies & HD) Now stuff is more hidden. I'm not a big Spotlight user, but this time I needed to find a specific file. Microsoft is using all consumers to be used as testers and that is why they so much data error reports sent to them. try the things they say to start with but if they fail, rip it out of enclosure, plug into spare sata port on pc.
